"Questions regarding the future of nextBBS"

  • chrisfrApr 13, 2009, 3:09 amI have questions.
I hope you guys have answers :)

    Language availability and web hosting

    1. Do you need for nBBS to be PHP-based? Or would another language such as Ruby work? (not all ISPs offer Ruby)
    2. PHP: Do you need to retain PHP4 compatibility or is PHP5 ok?
    Identity

    1. Should nBBS remain an independent entity or should it be merged with PHPBB? (become a fork...)
    2. Should nBBS be self-sufficient or become a module, for Wordpress or Drupal or..?
    More questions are coming...
    Cheers!
  • chrisfrApr 13, 2009, 3:10 amBTW, thank you all for taking the time.
I have cherry-picked you from the list of people who have supported nBBS along the years and I fully trust your judgement so fire away!

    1. Well, i think nbbs should be written in php5 - Its flexible, and
of cousre, did you know a webhoter which doesnt have php5-support?
Which have ruby support? If you mean ruby is a better one, write it in
ruby, i have my own server, i can set it up for ruby xD - no, really: i
prefer it to write it in php.
    2. Of course, no! PHP4 is too old for nBBS ;) - PHP5 and not any version below!

    1. I think it should be independent
    2. self-sufficient and a module. Yep, good idea :D

I dont know if this stands on your todo-list: Multilangual? But this is now standard, isnt it?

I would prefer a own forum-area for other languages, like now @ nbbscom.

I hope i could help you a little bit ;)

    1. Do you need for nBBS to be PHP-based? Or would another language such as Ruby work? (not all ISPs offer Ruby) I think you'll have to stick with PHP... All ISP's support PHP.
    2. PHP: Do you need to retain PHP4 compatibility or is PHP5 ok? PHP5 is ok. Or you can 'USE' PHP4 too :p
    Identity

    1. Should nBBS remain an independent entity or should it be merged with PHPBB? (become a fork...)PHPBB is great, but nBBS can even be greater! (so I say independent)
    2. Should nBBS be self-sufficient or become a module, for Wordpress or Drupal or..? It would be great if you have the option to make it work as a module in Wordpress etc. But... would this be usefull?
    Greetz ;)

    Burn.
  • chrisfrApr 13, 2009, 3:16 pmA few comments, first regarding the current state of nBBS v2:
    1. Indeed, a lot of things do not work, yet. That's because it's a re-write. For instance, [quotes] are not expanded. Note that one interesting thing about this version is that it's compatible with WordPress filter plug-ins; therefore I need to load a plug-in for quotes :)
    2. And many more, such as: you have to come back to check whether you've got replies because notifications do not work yet.
